Resistance

Everyone has moments, or days, when they don’t feel like practicing but know they must. When resistance comes up, be gentle with yourself. Like many musicians, you may notice that most of your resistance is simply against making the trip over to the instrument and facing the work that awaits. Once you put yourself in position to practice, resistance usually begins to dissolve.

Proceed slowly and gently from whatever state of mind you’re in. If you fight the resistance by dragging yourself over to the instrument and forcing yourself to practice, you create tension and are likely to feel even more resistant than before. Instead, let yourself feel the resistance, and then slowly take one step at a time toward the instrument and take your time getting started. See if anything arouses your curiosity. It can be something as simple as how your hands feel that day. Try placing them on the instrument. Notice how they feel. Play one note or a few notes. See what each movement feels like. By relaxing with your resistance, you can gently break it down.
